The evolution of fast charging
As people use mobile phones for longer and longer periods of time, how to effectively upgrade the charging efficiency and shorten the charging time with increasing battery capacity has become a major issue for mobile phone manufacturers. Moreover, as fast charging performance index is becoming one of dominant selling points, most of branded phone manufacturers have already focused on adopting different fast charging technologies to concrete their commercial territories. When comes to fast charging, the first impression it leaves to most people it is about a quick charging speed. The charging speed is measured by wattage which is calculated by volt and ampere of the product. In other words, the higher the wattage of the battery delivers, the faster it charges.
At the beginning, considering 2A current carry capability of micro USB connector, 5V/2A was released. Then, Qualcomm QC 2.0 charging protocol by increasing fixed voltage from 5V to 9 or 12V with 2A constant current was pursued. However, this makes the lower-conversion efficiency inside mobile phone and results in unignorable thermal impact. At this timing, released Type-C receptacle or other customer-made USB connectors with significantly uplifted current carry capability to 5A even more brings the huge changes. Hence, the high current with low voltage charging method has become the latest market trend. OPPO VOOC 1.0 5V/4.5A is one typical successful example that inspired the market. Of course, this can’t satisfy all. So, with the innovative technology, a variety of charging protocols with adaptive and programmable voltage and current control have been widely released from 2016. It includes Qualcomm QC 3.0 – QC 4+, OPPO VOOC 2.0-4.0 and Super VOOC, Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging, Huawei Supercharge etc. Fortunately, USB Power Delivery from the USB-IF standards finally convince all to release PD 3.0 with PPS (Programmable Power Supply), 3.3-21V with 20mV step and 5A maximum with 50mA step, to be compatible with all and become major fast charging protocol from now on. To unify the using standard, charger which supports USB-PD charging must adopt Type-C port (began from PD 2.0). PD 3.0 ensures backwards compatibility with USB PD 2.0. With increasing battery capacity up to 5000mA in mobile phones, power budget of fast chargers is upgraded from general 18-27W to 45-65W and even 100-120W claimed by Xiaomi and VIVO recently.
About PPS, there are two usage models: Powering devices in use with a fixed source and charging of battery-powered devices. The fixed-voltage features were in place with PD 2.0; PD 3.0 introduces PPS, which attempts to make battery charging more efficient. PPS will not only improve the charging efficiency but also lower the thermal situation when charging.

For early design, power requirements for mobile electronics were not as complicated as they are today. Phihong provided standard chargers, which support USB-A port and power 5W to 10W for most of personal electronics at that time. Moreover, it had either fixed pin or interchangeable design, allowing users to enjoy convenient charging experiences while travelling to different areas.
However, as the battery capacity of personal electronics is getting bigger, people now prefer to use chargers, which must have high power efficiency. In addition, more and more devices now support Type-C port charging. Last but not least, later products from Apple support USB-PD charging which causes PD charger is becoming the first choice for most people in the world. Hence, Phihong provides four different PD chargers ranging from 18W to 65W; all of them have adopted PD3.0 charging protocol and meet IEC/EN/UL 60950 and 62368 safety standards. Moreover, all of Phihong’s products have adopted OVP/OCP/SCP/OTP protection standards. To achieve a higher position in the whole power supply market, Phihong keeps updating its product designs (27W/45W/65W).

Phihong start applying GaN technology to its future products
From the latest market trend in power supply field, the charger should be smaller and more powerful than they used to be. Charger manufacturers now are facing formidable challenges about how to limit the size while enhance the efficiency of power conversion at the same time. Silicon (Si) has been used for years and now has reached its limits. Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology would become a new and undisputed solution for the future. GaN technology is superior to silicon (Si) in the creation of small power systems with more efficient power conversion. Use of GaN impacts not only the power transistor, but also overall product design and in decreasing cost around other system components including capacitor, cooling, heat sinks, and inductors. Phihong is developing its GaN series ranging from 65W to 350W, which could satisfy more product applications such as working stations, e-bike battery charger, medical devices and drones. Production Base (Vietnam Factory)
In 1996, Phihong established the first overseas production base in Donguan City, the third largest computer production area in the world. The plant area covers 40,911 square meters and employs more than 4,000 people. In succession, Dong Guan Phitek Electronics Co., Ltd and Chin Sheng Hong (Jiangxi) Electronics Co., Ltd. were established. All production plants in China passed ISO9001 quality system certifications, ISO14001 environmental certifications and OHSAS18001 occupational safety and health systems. In response to the economic turmoil caused by the Sino-American trade war in late 2018, the company launched the New Southbound Plan. The plan included construction of factories in Vietnam to avoid the risk of concentrating production in China, which would increase shipment flexibility. Located in the second largest seaport in Vietnam, shipment by vessels to China, Japan, Korea, Europe and North America can be shipped weekly. The plant area covers 22,418 square meters and employs approximately 1,500 people from the local area. Mass production began in Q1 of 2020.
