In 2020, STMicroelectronics launched the STM32WB series of microcontrollers. STM32WB microcontrollers are equipped with a radio system compliant with the IEEE802.15.4 standard, which provides support for Bluetooth 5.2 (BLE) as well as Open Thread and ZigBee. The STM32WB5MMG wireless module is the next step to facilitate the use of STM32WB as a ready-made solution.

STM32WB5MMG wireless module

The module is based on the STM32WB55 microcontroller and offers 1 MB of Flash memory. It is packed in the LGA 86 housing and contains all the necessary elements integrated, including the antenna. Everything is designed in such a way, that the customer can launch on market his IoT product as soon as possible.

The module offers high performance, multi-protocol flexibility, safety features, the same ultra-low power consumption modes as the STM32WB microcontroller, and a wide range of certifications. Like the entire STM32WB portfolio, the STM32WB5MMG is covered by the “Longetivity” manufacturer’s program ensuring continuity of supply for 10 years.

Bluetooth, Zigbee, OpenThread

The STM32WB5MMG module supports the same wireless protocols as the STM32WB series: Bluetooth® LE 5.2 with multiple profiles, Zigbee PRO with Zigbee 3.0 clusters, and OpenThread for MTD and RFD modes.

The STM32WB5MMG module contains 1 MB Flash memory which provides enough space for a large application using protocol stacks, both in standalone and shared mode.

The STM32WB5Mx wireless module is based on the LGA86 housing (7 x 11.3 mm). Its small form factor provides designers with minimal footprint and sufficient memory size for easy integration into any end-use application without the need of RF design advanced knowledge.

The applied layout of pins allows the design of a 2-layer PCB in the case of using basic peripherals or a 4-layer PCB in the case of full use of available peripherals.

To ensure wide geographic coverage, the STM32WBxM complies with the following standards: CE for Europe, FCC for USA, JRF for Japan, SRRC for China, GOST for Russia, KC for Korea, NCC for Taiwan.

The STM32WB55 Nucleo Suite and the STM32Cube ecosystem form a coherent set of software development tools to quickly and easily start designing the application.

The STM32CubeWB suite is a comprehensive software development solution. It includes HAL and LL libraries, full set of examples and radio stacks (Bluetooth LE 5.2, OpenThread, Zigbee 3.0, Open Protocols). The STM32WBxM module is compatible with the STM32CubeMX code configuration and code generation tool and the STM32CubeMonRF radio communication testing and validation software.

The STM32WBxM module is compatible with the STM32CubeMX MCU initialization, configuration and code generation tool and the STM32CubeMonRF software for RF performance testing and validation.
